Skaters Often Take It for Granted, But Cracks Don't Just Fix Themselves. |
| |
| |
It takes a lot of dedication and work to repair the cracks in the skating area at Mission Bay behind the Hilton Hotel at 1775 East Mission Bay Drive, San Diego, CA. But there is one man who does it with pleasure. |
| |
| |
He Has Been Doing It for 18 Years. Paul Dunham, an avid skater, who has enjoyed skating at the Bay every Sunday for almost twenty years, volunteers to keep the cracks fixed by filling them with concrete patch. |
| |
| |
"I absolutely love it here", he says. "It is the most beautiful place in the world to skate. I know it is a lot of work to fix the cracks and hardly anyone appreciates it, but I want everyone who skates here to have a good experience." |

Paul comes out during the week to fix the cracks. He's sort of like a Tooth Fairy for cracks. I guess you could call him the "Crack Fairy". |
| |
| |
| |
"You can't just walk up and fill a crack like "that"." says Paul. "There is a lot of planning and preparation first." |

There are several steps involved to make a good patch. First, cleaning the crack of loose sand and debris. Then masking the edges with tape to insure a clean finish. |
| |
| |
| |
The next step is applying a liquid cement bonding agent with a brush. Then applying the concrete patch with a putty knife. |
| |
| |
| |
And the last step is removing the tape to finish up. |

Here is Paul on a Sunday enjoying the benefit of his labors with other skaters. |
